The Primary Purpose of the Child Welfare Service unit is to accept reports of child abuse, neglect and dependency through Child Protective Services; to assess levels of risk to children through protective services investigations; and to take appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of children by the provision of either:
- In-Home Family Services to families, or
- By assuming legal custody and providing various Foster Care services.
The CPS and Foster Care Units also serve to enhance public awareness of child welfare issues through relations with community agencies and the general public.
